The Social Contract; Thomas Hobbes postulated that life of people in their "state of nature" would be "solitary, poor, brutish, nasty and short" and in the presence of ultimate freedom, ie: "the right to all things", there would be an endless "war of all against all" or "bellum omnium contra omnes". In order to find a solution to the chaos that would ensue, Hobbes stipulated that all individuals would relinquish part of their freedoms to a state, a person or multiple persons that would reign supreme above all people, ensuring security and leading to a civic society.
