Alexis de Tocqueville

  • known for "Democracy in America" (1835),
    • money being the only achievement that America respected; book being sold being judged at market value instead of literary value,
    • democracy breeds envy and shame; when variations of wealth are small the slightest variation attracts attention whereas in Europe with a hierarchical and unjust system people do not need to take the achievement of others as such a reference point in order to find themselves wanting in status,
    • tyranny of the majority, in a society ruled by the majority the society has a severe leveling instinct,
    • democracy turns people against authority; comparison to Europe where people looked up to various traits of people that stood out whereas in America people disregarded authorities such that democracy leads to mediocrity,
    • democracy undermines freedom of thinking; Americans giving up on critical thinking and placing their faith in news outlets or common sense and it became wiser to trot out cliches instead of being original,
