We got a little bored of having our facebook wall polluted with all the garbage, nonsense and "Like me if you drink water."-pyramidal schemes. So we thought to give it a go and block the most popular applications out there. Of course, if you browse to your "Privacy Settings", then to "Blocked People and Apps" and then select "Manage Blocking" you will notice that at the bottom where it says: "Block apps" and you have an input field, you are unable to add a full-list of trash. This would not go well with the mini-datamining businesses running and that is also probably why the only blocking you can do is through blacklisting instead of whitelisting.

facebook also disallows any API access that would allow you to block applications by using a program, so the only way around that was to simply create a macro that will manually input the application names in the facebook field.

We went ahead and assembled a dictionary file containing all the popular facebook applications spanning multiple years. The dictionary is an unsorted listing of facebook applications, one on every line. It is best if you review it first and delete the applications that you are using.

1. First, download both files and save them somewhere accessible - your desktop, for example.
2. Now, browse to your privacy page on FaceBook.
3. Open the facepalm script which you downloaded at the first step.
4. On your privacy page on FaceBook, under Block apps, click once in the textfield where it says Type the name of an app….
5. Now press the Run button in the applescript editor and select the FacePalmList-20120612.txt you downloaded at the fist step.

Facepalm will start to type in the name of the applications and block them one-by-one. This will take a while and you may have to repeat the process again because in some circumstances you will get a prompt saying that you have made too many searches and you should wait for a while. Just wait, and then start the process again.

If all goes well, you should have wiped most of the litter from your facebook wall as well as being polite enough not to throw a fit on your friends page about spamming your wall.

You can of course go through the dictionary list and delete the applications that you do not want blocked - or you can manage it directly by unblocking them from your facebook page.
