jack seems to be an universal word, apparently stemming originally from Middle English "jakke" and a stub for "any mechanical device" with countless derivates and compositions with various meanings. Possibly, since the original meaning is shallow (or catch-all), the word became a valid substitute for anything that cannot or should not be precisely defined (for example, slang phrases).
