Online Mobbing - Romania

The following gallery is the result of a test performed on 9GAG consisting in criticizing Romania, or rather, creating anti-Romanian memes with the purpose of elucidating the extent of acceptance of free speech and criticism.

To be mild, the conclusions can only fall short of shill farms, generalized mobbing and domestic terrorism. What is interesting is the amount of Romanians now living as foreign nationals in various countries in Europe that do have a notion of free speech (ie: United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy, Monaco, etc) that seem to talk-back and scan these forums for dissenting talk, only to jump in and attempt to counter the criticism even if their own criticism is detrimental to themselves. The psychological gymnastics is at an all time high, with most of the commenters trying to appease and normalize topics ranging from genocide to pedophilia whilst at the same time portraying themselves with an opposing view otherwise. Whilst it is typically acceptable to blame the older generations for such behavior, it stands to reason that websites like 9GAG cater mostly to a younger audience, with most of the young people involved in this sort of online shilling.

This case is based on the Sky News event dating 7 years back, in which some Sky News reporters published a documentary claiming that firearms are available on the black market in Romania. Even though, in the context of this section, it is irrelevant whether the report was "fake", as Romanians have claimed, or not, it's just that the sheer number of negative comments and down-votes from a wide-array of people online seemed to denote a hive mind of phenomenal proportions. The curiosity back then was whether the Romanian reaction was "organic" or rather "orchestrated" by someone, even if peer-to-peer, in order to determine whether the people generally cared or were just mobbing online and trying to sway public opinion.
