Shortnote

Simulator crossings are perilous given the asynchronous nature of entity transfers. For a short distance, right on the simulator border, all primitives become phantom such that a crossing avatar will fall through objects (noclip). One easy way to fix this is to permit a crossing using terraforming, by creating a land bridge between the simulators. That way, the avatars will cross over land, which is safer than crossing over primitives. However, it is not always the case that simulator crossings will occur at ground level and it is entirely possible that the crossing will in fact occur at a certain altitude.

The following guide should provide a reference on how to build bridges that will allow an avatar to cross from one side to the other.

Rules

  • The bridge cannot be one single linked object. It has to consist of two pieces, each placed in a simulator.
  • The bridge pieces from either simulator, may not cross into the other simulator. Instead they must be aligned on the border (see below).
  • The thickness of the bridge gives some leeway for mistakes - in case the alignment on the border is not perfect.

Design

The bridge cannot be linked and must consist of two separate objects, one on either side of the simulator crossing.

 Simulator-crossing bridge

The figure shows a bridge that is split in half along the yellow Simulator Crossing line, so that both parts are on Simulator A, respectively Simulator B. The thin red line splits the bridge in half and is used as a measurement of the actual simulator border.

It is important that the gap between the two bridge pieces is as small as possible and that the pieces from either simulator do not cross into the other simulator. In the figure, the gap is not noticeable because of the tile-like bridge texture. The thickness of the bridge is also important because it can compensate for misaligned bridge tiles: when an entity crosses between simulators, right on the border, the avatar becomes phantom and if the bridge is tick enough it will provide a cushion for misalignment of the bridge pieces.

If one bridge piece crosses into the other simulator, instead of being properly aligned on the border, then that piece becomes phantom and an avatar will fall off.
