About

Matthias Münch develops a small board that allows you to expand the number of clockport ports inside the Amiga. Unfortunately, many devices that connect to the clockport expect to be the single ones and they all feed off the 5V rails off the clockport such that, in many cases, the power provided by the motherboard is insufficient to power all devices.

Expansions such as the Individual Computers' RapidRoad USB by Jens have an additional port in order to seep power off the floppy power connector thereby compensating for the lack of power. This is however not the case for other expansions such as the Delfina sound card or the Silversurfer.

This modification will provide the clockport expander with power off the main 5V rails and hopefully compensate for the division of power on the clockport expander.

Requirements

  • Soldering tools.
  • Dupont cables.
  • Continuity tester.

Procedure

The procedure involves soldering a female Dupont socket lead onto pin 20 of the clockport. The socket can then be plugged with a male Dupont cable that will draw power off the main 5V rail from the power supply.

After that, the Dupont socket can be glued down - preferably some epoxy-based glue that does not damage the plastic. Finally, a male Dupont cable can be attached after the clockport expander has been mounted into the Amiga and attached directly to the power-source - this can involve either soldering the cable to the Amiga main power socket or otherwise depending on your setup.

Conclusions

It is noteworthy that the clockport expander does just that: it manages to extend the number of clockports, however that does not imply that the attached devices have the necessary power to run. This small patch should provide sufficient amperage (and hence, the necessary Wattage) to run hungry extension boards such as the Delfina soundcard.
